Member Feedback: ...I also receive (another publication) and many of the articles that you guys are pulling are not in there. There was one article in the most recent (newsletter) that was on CPG's and restaraunts and how each are competing. It turned out to be VERY helpful in many ways because it was such a complete article on all avenues not just frozen or RTE salads...

The first week of Retail July 2008 started off on the hot side tying last year as the 2nd hottest early July period in 16+ years. It was also rather wet, especially in the Southeast where the most rain fell since early April further helping to alleviate drought conditions. Mosquito and flying pests have been prolific in the Midwest but heavy rain in the East will bring some of that to the East over the next week or two.
June retail industry same-store-sales gains were twice as high as Wall Street expected at +4.3% according to data from ICSC. Warm weather, economic stimulus checks and promotional activity were cited as the reasons for the much stronger than expected gains. The Discounters and Clubs again did well. So far the Summer season is trending 1.3°F above average for national temperatures with near normal rainfall helping the seasonal categories do well.
The next two weeks will have favorably hot weather across most of the country with a 4-day heat-wave of 90F+ temperatures from Chicago to New York for the later half of this week. The hot weather over the next two weeks is likely to be the hottest period of the Summer nationally which is about 4 weeks earlier than last year when middle August was the hottest period. The next two weeks are great opportunities for Summer clearance sales but leave some hot weather categories out West as the Fall season will be warm through early October. Read More

CATEGORY MANAGEMENT: Campbell Wants to Remodel Juice and Drink Shelf Sets
Campbell Soup Company aims to help retailers renovate the profitable shelf-stable juice and drink category through innovative shelving solutions. The approach relies on a new market structure as a blueprint for a different layout for the $5 billion category in food, drug and mass outlets. Sales have declined in recent years as alternatives such as water and flavored water have gained share. Since more shoppers are connecting nutrition to good health and are making food choices accordingly, Campbell plans to help retailers leverage their “wellness credibility” in stores. “But a new shelf configuration based on nutrition is just part of the category solution," said Mike Murphy, director of category and shopper solutions. Since a significant amount of decision-making takes places in store, Campbell recommends reinventing the category by creating point-of-purchase (POP) solutions based on shelving, communication and education...

Grocers bulk up with DVD sales; Catalog titles, slow economy are helping category boost business
Video Business
Grocers are bagging more DVDs for customers, as managers overcome threat concerns and benefit from a softening economy. Although many grocers have been getting out of the DVD rental business, preferring to offer that service through kiosks such as Redbox, rising gas prices, low-priced catalog titles and security fixtures are helping grocers build a healthy sell-through DVD business. "The average grocery shopper will come in once or more a week, and consumers are less concerned with saving a little money [on the DVD] by going to a mass merchant than they are concerned with rising gas costs," said Bob Geistman, senior VP of sales and marketing at Ingram Entertainment. "They will purchase more of their products at grocery."

Video: New Natural Pet Diet Promotes Rotation for Better Nutrition; Nature's Variety pet food forms expert council to provide consumers with insight on diet's benefits
PR Newswire
LINCOLN, Neb., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Following last year's devastating pet food recall, pet owners are more careful than ever to choose foods made with healthy ingredients. A high quality natural pet food is a great place to start, but that's no longer enough. Experts agree that variety is an important -- and often overlooked -- component in pet nutrition. "Just like humans, pets require a variety of foods in order to obtain the optimal level of nutrition from their diet," said Dr. Susan Lauten, a leading clinical instructor of veterinary medicine. Experts like Dr. Lauten agree that the ideal diet for dogs and cats includes rotation between proteins (e.g. beef, chicken, salmon) and forms (dry kibble, canned, and raw frozen pet food). Clorox is Most Competitive Consumer Goods Company and Publix is Most Competitive Retailer in 2008, According to wRatings Annual Study Sponsored by SAP; Coach, Family Dollar and Staples among the Most Competitive Retailers; Coca-Cola and Wrigley among the Most Competitive CG Companies. Companies overall are better meeting consumer expectations in 2008 than in 2007, yet pricing power is difficult to find.
Business Wire
The wRatings Corporation, an independent competitive research firm, announced today the results of the annual Most Competitive Retail & Consumer Goods Study, which was sponsored by SAP AG (NYSE:SAP), the world's leading provider of business software*. In the report, Clorox (NYSE:CLX) rises from #14 in 2007 to #1 in 2008 with a W Score(TM) of 96.1. Publix, an employee-owned company, is the #1 retailer with a W Score of 92.0. A W Score of 100 means the business built the highest consumer and economic advantages when compared with the 540+ companies in the wRatings national coverage. Being strong on both the consumer and financial fronts, highly competitive companies are most likely to withstand the economic downturn. For example, Clorox so far has successfully passed on rising commodity costs to consumers because consumers value their stability and usability over rival products. At Publix, consumers prefer shopping at the grocery store because of their superior customer service, somethi...

Footfalls aren't falling
Business Today
Last fortnight, Noel Tata, Managing Director, Trent Ltd, flagged off its 4th hypermarket format, a Star Bazaar flagship store, in suburban Mumbai. This is the second such store in Mumbai. Spread over 75,000 sq. ft, the store will stock everything from essentials to niche items like exotic cuisines at an international food section, a live bakery and a deli section. The Tata company's Star Bazaar is, doubtless, yet another gleaming temple of modern-day India. Yet, at a time when inflation is raging and consumer sentiment isn't at its zenith, the timing of the launch could be questioned. Tata, for his part, doesn't see any cause for shilly-shallying. It is not risky to open a store in this category of products and in a format that is really trying to bring value to the customer. Our aim is to give the customer the best quality at the lowest possible price and, therefore, it's possibly the best time for us when the customers are also looking for the best deals on offer, Tata told BT at th...
