With many children going back to school prior to Labor Day this year, this final BTS week was much more favorable for apparel items like jeans and layered items over the record heat last year. This past week was the 3rd coldest late August period in 16+ years and 2nd wettest nationally which are much more favorable trends for cool weather items over hot weather categories. Headline news was on Tropical Storm Fay that was a very slow mover through Florida and the Deep South dumping upwards of 2 feet of rainfall. Recall last year the concern in Florida was drought – this year it’s flooding. Flooding is obviously great for storm related merchandise but can be very disruptive to retail store traffic unless it’s a home center or discounter selling cleaning supplies, building materials, etc. The 4-week retail August will end up as the 2nd coldest August in 11 years and 2nd wettest in 16+ years for the nation as a whole with hot 90F days down a significant 48% vs last year.
The week leading up to Labor Day shows more of the same with 92% of the U.S. trending colder than last year with the 4th coldest/4th wettest pre-Labor Day week in 16+ years. Recall last year was the 2nd hottest pre-Labor day week in 16+ years so the change toward colder weather is very dramatic. The tropics bear watching as the next hurricane (Gustav) is developing in the Caribbean and heading in the direction of the Gulf of Mexico. Read More.

SUPPLY CHAIN: Coca-Cola Scores with Collaborative Store Ordering
A collaborative store ordering test led by Coca-Cola Enterprises and Wegmans Food Markets has driven higher overall sales and in-stock positions of Coke’s branded beverages, and reduced days of supply on hand. These results were achieved in eight stores across Wegmans’ headquarters market of Rochester, N.Y. versus eight control stores where no other changes were made to direct-store-delivery (DSD) processes “to allow us to test the true value of collaborative ordering,” said Kraig Adams at Coca-Cola Enterprises, Coke’s leading bottler. The six-month pilot, which ended in May 2008, appears to have put the trading partners on a better course to optimize inventory levels...

Future Shock
Supermarket News
When Metro Group opened its first Future Store at an Extra supermarket in Rheinberg, Germany, in late April 2003, the store may have gained as much notice for the appearance of supermodel and Rheinberg native Claudia Schiffer at the grand opening as for its collection of advanced retail technologies. But the store gradually became known as a kind of mecca for in-store technology, attracting more than 31,000 visitors from 63 countries who wanted to see deployments of such systems as RFID-based smart shelves, intelligent produce scales, personal shopping assistants, a variety of kiosks, electronic shelf labels and anti-theft portals. It was said to be the largest collection of in-store technologies ever assembled under one roof. Metro Group, Germany's largest retailer, with headquarters in Dusseldorf, used the Rheinberg Future Store as a real-world test site for retail and supply chain technologies until last year; the store now operates as a conventional supermarket. "Numerous innovati...

Do your research
Retail Week
In today's retail climate, knowing your customer inside out is vital to your business's success. Gathering customer information is key to delivering efficient and targeted marketing campaigns. But one of the biggest - and often overlooked - benefits of good customer insight is its value in tailoring and improving your business; developing unique relationships and experiences with customers will keep them coming back. Richard Clark, managing director of retail market research agency BCMR, says that understanding your customer in terms of their attitude and demographic and how they view your business is essential. "It gives you the information on which to base your decision-making - whether that's about store environment, price architecture or product," he says. However, John Lewis head of marketing strategy and planning Rob Weston says it is even more fundamental to your business than that. "If you don't know how to serve customers and get them through you door, you won't survive," he ...

BAD HAIR DAYS
Supermarket News
Hair care is hurting. Due to the sluggish economy, shoppers aren't spending as much on shampoo, conditioner and styling products. Only select consumers are continuing to shell out cash for salon-grade sundries. Some are willing to pay slightly more for items with functional features like straighteners, anti-frizz ingredients and curl enhancers, but only if they offer conveniences they don't want to live without. The rest are moving toward less-expensive brands, retailers told SN. Publix Super Markets, Lakeland, Fla., has experienced an uptick in sales of budget-conscious items such as V05 and Tresemme due to the economy, according to Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous. Shoppers there are also stretching their dollars by buying bulk.

EBB TIDE
Supermarket News
In an economy where many consumers are struggling to tread water, supermarket seafood sales may be one of the latest casualties as shoppers reel in their food budgets. The Perishables Group reported that fresh seafood sales in supermarkets have struggled slightly in the past 13 weeks, declining by 3.6% compared to the same period in 2007. According to the report, which covers supermarket seafood performance through June 1, eight of the top 10 fresh seafood categories have declined in sales over the past 13 weeks. Overall retail prices on fresh seafood are up 1.4%, according to Steve Lutz, executive vice president of the Perishables Group.
